The long days of summer are here, and with them a comes a welcome return to fun, outdoor offerings. After a couple of years with minimal celebration in community, a cavalcade of county fairs and outdoor festivals are set to make their comeback around the Bay Area.

So put on your summer layers, pull out the beach blankets and prepare for live music and art a la carte, carnival fun and fair food galore at some of the many in-person offerings on the agenda for the summer months ahead:

County fairs

Alameda County Fair

Four weekends of fair-time fun featuring a lineup of live concerts, including performances from Neon Trees, Ginuwine, 38 Special, Mustache Harbor, ConFunkShun, Blue Oyster Cult, Great White and others; a nightly drone show; motocross and medieval jousting competitions; outdoor screenings of family-friendly films; carnival rides and midway; fair foods livestock and home arts competitive exhibitions and more.

Sonoma-Marin Fair: Everybody's Fair

This county fair has a little extra in the form of classic car shows, the world's ugliest dog contest and horse racing on the schedule, along with tried-and-true carnival rides and midway; fair food and craft vendors; livestock and home arts competitive exhibitions; and more.

Marin County Fair: So Happy Together

The Marin County Fair celebrates in-person again, with a focus on outdoor entertainment that includes roaming jugglers, unicyclists, stilt walkers and interactive art experiences. The popular competitive exhibits program will take place online again this year. Live, nightly mainstage performers include Pablo Cruise, Sheila E., Sons of Champlin, Digable Planets, George Porter Jr. and Dumpstaphunk. There will be a nightly firework shows, carnival rides and midway, livestock exhibitions, a global marketplace, a hip-hop dance competition and more.

California State Fair

The state fair will feature competitive home arts and livestock exhibitions; live nightly performances including Chaka Khan, Neon Trees, Night Ranger, KC and the Sunshine Band, Los Lonely Boys, TLC and Smash Mouth; a California Kitchen stage with demos and workshops; corn dog and pie eating contests; a Brewfest; cannabis exhibit; horse show; a "Candy Selfie Experience" area and more.

Amador County Fair: Around the World in Four Days

Featuring live music; livestock and home-arts competitive exhibitions; rodeo; demolition derby; hot rod truck pull contest; carnival rides and midway; fair food; vendor marketplace; wine tasting and more.

Sonoma County Fair: Tropical Fairadise

The Sonoma County Fair is set to include the NorCal Brew Fest and competition; live musical performances and entertainment on four stages; horse races; rodeo; monster truck rally; carnival rides and midway; fair foods; vendors; Hall of Flowers and more.

Other local fairs and festivals

Stern Grove Festival

The free, outdoor series in San Francisco will include performances from Tower of Power, Old Crow Medicine Show, LeAnn Rimes, the S.F. Symphony, Taj Mahal, Phil Lesh and others.

Evenings on the Colonnade at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk

Enjoy classic boardwalk amusements, then rock out to live music on the seashore as Bay Area bands — including Extra Large, San Matiz, the Deadlies, Brass Magic and others  — perform Thursday evenings through the summer.

Settle in with fresh saltwater taffy, corn dogs and other boardwalk snacks for a different family-friendly flick each week on the big screen outside in front of the colonnade. Bring a beach blanket or low-back chair for seating.

Lakefest Oakland

A summer festival celebration of community and culture is scheduled to take place along the 3-mile shoreline of Lake Merritt in Oakland. The family-friendly event will feature live music and kids entertainment; an artisan marketplace with food; retail and nonprofit vendors; a kids fun zone; tech pavilion and outdoor beer garden.

The Freshtival

The Bay Area Brewers Guild, Somo Arts Village and Fat Dogg Productions present a fresh beer festival in which all of the more than 150 beers poured at the event are less than 1 week old. There are also plans for a live music stage hosted by Trixxie Carr; an art exhibition;' food vendors; an artisanal community marketplace and brewery-fresh beer. The nonprofit event will benefit the brewers guild, with proceeds benefiting their work advocating for independent, local, beer manufacturing.

Mosswood Meltdown

John Waters is once again set to host the live punk and rock music festival this year, featuring a heavyweight lineup including Kim Gordon, Pansy Division, Bikini Kill, Shannon Shaw, the Linda Lindas, Rubinoos, the Dirtbombs, Hunx and His Punx, Bleached, Flipper, Carbonas, the Fevers, Brontez Purnell, Fatty Cakes and the Puff Pastries, Snooper and Podium; as well as food and drinks vendors and a marketplace.

2022 Bizerkeley Food Festival

Sample vegan food and more at a festival set to feature food vendors and samples; wine and hard kombucha tasting; live entertainment; speakers; a silent auction with proceeds benefiting the Friends of Animal Care Services; and more.

11th Annual Blues and Brews Festival

On Friday night, there will be a family-friendly party featuring a kid's zone, live music from Landbirds and the Big Jangle with room to dance. The Saturday main stage is set to include live music from Santana tribute band Zebop, Beaufunk, Sonny & the Black Pack and Frankie G & the Conviction; a craft brew tasting tent (tickets needed and 21+ area); food, drinks and artisan vendors.

Festival Napa Valley

A variety of chamber and solo music concerts; luncheons with music; an Arts for All gala including a performance by Grammy Award-winning country music vocalist Trisha Yearwood; a Manetti Shrem Opera Program production of Donizetti's "L'elisir d'amore" featuring soprano Andriana Chuchman with Gemma New conducting the Festival Orchestra Napa; and their Novack Concerts for Kids series, presented at venues throughout Napa Valley.

Golden Gate Jazz Festival

A three-day celebration of live jazz is set to include performances from Tony Saunders, Count Basie Orchestra, the Escovedo Brothers, Marion Meadows, Najee and others.

Friends of the Petaluma River Presents: Rivertown Revival

Celebrate the Petaluma River and its watershed at a festival with two days of live music, art exhibits, riparian conservation and education booths, food and artisan vendors. The music lineup is set to include Sean Hayes, Royal Jelly Jive, Tamborazo Santo Domingo, Sebastian Saint James and the Highway Poets, Fog Holler, the Rivertown Revue with Josh Windmiller. In addition there will be a large family area with a quiet tent.

The annual, live opera performance series is scheduled to include Handel's "Julius Caesar," Paul Dukas' "Ariane and Bluebeard," and "Coraline" by Mark Anthony Turnage.

San Jose Jazz Summer Fest

The Silicon Valley based jazz music festival returns for its 32nd festival season, featuring live music on ten stages, food, drinks and craft vendors.
